What's in a Genre?

I must make a confession...I'm fickle when it comes to genre.
Over the past few months, I have been asked what genre I like. Seeing as how I have a ya epic fantasy series, everyone assumes that is what I read, but it isn't always the case. Naturally I love the genre I write in, but I find inspiration in many other genre as well.
I can honestly say that I can read any genre as long as the story has a strong plot and it is well written. I'm not kidding. I've read several paranormal romances, murder mysteries, of course fantasy but add into that urban fantasy and post apocalyptic fantasy, and have even taken on a chic lit, which I must say was written very, very well.
In all honesty, I might not have picked up some of those books if it weren't for knowing the authors on a personal basis, but in each and every case, I have enjoyed them in their own way.
So with my first paranormal romance thriller at my publisher and an urban fantasy waiting in the wings to join my epic fantasy, I say...don't put boundaries on my writing, because you might even find some Sci-fi slipping in before you know it.
What do you think? Should writers stick to one genre, or feel confident to cross genre and spread their writing around?
